New compression technology rivals PDF

A new compression and document delivery technology has been launched by LizardTech Inc.  Documents can be compressed between 15 and 100 times smaller than using a PDF format file - for high quality images, the compression ratio can be up to 1000:1 claims Lizard.

The system will speed up document downloads by 150 times and works via a plug-in to a browser much the same as the familiar PDF plug-in.  If no browser is detected then the data is transmitted in its native uncompressed format for normal viewing.

The technology was developed by AT&T and has a lot of potential uses for content providers and libraries where document and image transmission is a greedy bandwidth consumer. Indexing is supported and content protection capabilities can provide security.

LizardTech Inc.  today introduced the LizardTech™ Content Server 3.0 for the fastest delivery of high-resolution images and clear, crisp documents over the Internet. The Content Server establishes a new performance benchmark for the efficient delivery of digital images and documents and is ideally suited for delivering them under constrained bandwidth or with limited storage conditions through the use of LizardTech’s next-generation MrSID® and DjVu® technologies.

The Content Server delivers image files over the Internet as small, efficient pixel streams that optimize bandwidth with no loss in image quality.  It also supports industry-standard file formats and open standards, such as TIFF, JPEG and JPEG 2000.  Because it is based on a modular architecture, the functionality of the Content Server can be easily extended with such added features as Search, Database Integration and Security. XML- and XSL-based stylesheets allow for dynamic display of content for any viewing environment or device.

Using LizardTech’s MrSID format for photographs and DjVu format for documents, the Content Server makes it easy for companies to publish limitless amounts of high-quality information in a format compatible with every Web browser.  MrSID is a wavelet-based imaging technology that allows up to 97 percent file-size reduction while maintaining original image quality and providing instant viewing, panning and printing of reproduction-quality images.  DjVu, the new standard for scan-to-Web publishing, is a patented technology acquired from AT&T Labs that reduces the file size of scanned documents so users can download them 150 times faster than with other file formats, such as PDF.

The Content Server is scalable and multi-threaded, which makes it a valuable image and document server tool for growing organizations.  In fact, performance is bound only to the CPU, unlike any other competing product.  Intensive users of documents and images needing a robust Internet solution that expands to accommodate their growing customer base include: Corporate digital asset collections, Real estate sites, Online catalogs/retail companies, Auction sites, Libraries, Medical sites, Geospatial imagery/government agencies.
