Millennium wins in Turkey and Sweden

Innovative sells Oracle solution in Turkey, consolidates in Sweden and and wins prestigious place in business ranking.

Sweden's premier school of business and economics to install the Millennium

Bristol, England / Emeryville, California, USA - 13 July 1999

The Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan i Stockholm) has signed a contract with Innovative Interfaces to install the Millennium library automation system. Millennium will replace the library's current LIBERTAS system which was installed and supported for nearly 10 years by SLS Information Systems, now the European Division of Innovative Interfaces.

Eva Thomsoon-Roos, Chief Librarian, commented: "We have been looking for a new library system and particularly for a Web OPAC that could satisfy the needs of our customers.  Library use is swiftly changing from being based on the library as a tangible building, to a digital library focused on internet access.  Our target users are students within the area of Business and Economics, and this means that we are already serving customers who are accustomed to the internet and its graphical layouts.  The challenge to the library lies in ensuring our IT resources are visible in order to increase usage to an even higher degree. This means developing not only an attractive interface, but also a database that fulfils the need for several types of information ranging from books and journal articles, to internet resources and full text material."

"Nearly 10 years of LIBERTAS have taught us to place confidence in SLS not least demonstrated in the support we have had from SLS Scandinavia.  Recent contacts and demonstrations of Millennium have led us to a similar feeling of confidence in Innovative Interfaces and helped us choose Millennium as our future system."

The Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan i Stockholm) is a private university which was founded in 1909 by royal statute, and is the oldest Swedish institution of university standing which offers research-based educational programs in business administration and economics.  The Library of the Stockholm School of Economics is the National Resource Library for Business and Economics.  The principal collections of electronic and printed resources are within the fields of business and economics, but law and statistics are also covered.

Turkey's newest university selects Millennium

Bristol, England / Emeryville, California, USA - 29th July 1999

Sabanci University, a new private university located in Istanbul, has selected Millennium from Innovative Interfaces as the library management system for its impressive Information Centre.  The Millennium system will be installed in time for the first group of students when the university opens in October this year. Sabanci University was meticulously planned from the very start, and aims to become a global reference point for educational innovation. Being a key component in these plans, the right choice of library management software was vital and the University has decided to install the full complement of Millennium modules, together with many of its special features including store and display images, electronic reserves, materials booking, self-issue and an Oracle RDBMS.

Innovative have traditionally been supporters of the “proprietary is best for libraries” school of system suppliers. Moving into mainstream Oracle solutions is a sign of the times and a response to the success of Aleph500 and Voyager - both Oracle based.  Databases for libraries are discussed in technical briefings.

"We believe that Sabanci University, with its new physical environment, faculty, staff and students, combined with the Information Centre's facilities, information resources and service philosophy, will become a world university.  We also believe that another new addition, the Millennium library system, will provide us with an excellent window to access the entire world in terms of information storage and retrieval", said Hilmi Celik, Director of the Information Centre at Sabanci University.

Mr Celik continued, "Millennium was chosen by the University Information Centre as a next generation system with its integrated modules, full support of the Turkish language and character set, electronic imaging capabilities and use of leading-edge technologies.  We are excited at being able to have Java(tm)-based modules on an Oracle platform in the near future, giving us the opportunity to use open-platform client-server architecture. These are next century library automation solutions in the present."

"The relationship between an institution and its library management software is a long term one, and our exact definition and expectation is "a tool that has answers to all existing questions" and one which "works pro-actively to find answers to the questions yet unasked".  We absolutely believe that Innovative will be thinking of solutions in advance of our future requirements, helping us to create a better service environment and allowing access to every available piece of information all over the world."

Sabanci University, whose campus construction is due for completion in September this year, lies approximately 20 miles from the centre of Istanbul and will open for the first time in October.  Student in-take has been deliberately restricted to 253 for the first year, and the university is expected to grow by around 400 students per year until it reaches its' desired capacity of 3,000 by the end of the 5th year, 2004.  The Information Centre has a seating capacity for 500 users and a shelving system for 300,000 volumes, the total floor space is 9,500 square metres.
