University of Botswana, State of Maine, Two Swedish Libraries

Innovative Interfaces and the University of Botswana

PRESS RELEASE: Bristol, United Kingdom / Emeryville, California, USA – October 1999

Innovative Interfaces, will install its Millennium library automation software at the University of Botswana, based in Gabarone, before the end of this year. The University will be the first Innovative site in Botswana and  Millennium will replace EOSi T-Series and CDS/ISIS systems.

The University Library consists of three branch libraries and a special collections section, and has approximately 250,000 monographs, 30,000 bound volumes, 18,000 pamphlets and 1,500 serials. The library’s growth has prompted plans to move to a new, purpose-built facility next year and the University Library needed an automation system which would support its growing needs.

Mrs Kay Raseroka, Library Director at the University of Botswana, said “With a 20,000 per annum acquisitions program, over 10,000 patrons and requirements for a reserve book section and internet booking systems, Millennium was found to be the best match. The Web access to OPAC and possibilities for linking directly with vendors were also some of the significant features.  These key points, together with Innovative’s provision of a committed and quick support service, are paramount to our operations and confirmed to us that Innovative was the right choice.”

“We are delighted that the University of Botswana is joining our growing list of customers in Africa”, said Innovative’s Business Manager, Petros Demetriou. “The University is closely involved with the national development process of Botswana and in support of this strategy, the University is planning to open distance learning centres at various towns and villages.  Millennium’s rich functionality, and its ability to deliver integrated access to both physical and Web-based resources to distance learners, will allow the University to achieve these objectives.  We were impressed with the University’s service delivery orientation, and Millennium’s ease of use for both staff and end users will ensure library services are delivered and received efficiently.

Mr Demetriou added, “We are also pleased that Innovative’s continuing commitment to African libraries, and our ability to offer excellent service and support to our customers in the region has been recognised, and was a key factor in the University’s decision to partner with Innovative.”

The University of Botswana Library has been in existence since 1971 when the first 1,000 volumes were housed in a disused church building in the village of Gaborone. The present building was opened in 1986, and is now overcrowded. The library will be expanding into a purpose-built new extension, tripling its present size, by the middle of year 2000. The first automated system was installed in May 1993.

STATE OF MAINE TO INSTALL MILLENNIUM AND INN-REACH

Press Release 30 September 1999

Innovative Interfaces, announced today that the state of Maine has chosen Millennium library automation software for all its libraries.

The Millennium systems contracted for the Maine State Library will form Maine InfoNet, a statewide connection of libraries. Maine InfoNet is the first truly statewide linking of all types of libraries, including all publicly supported academic, public, and school libraries. Total participation is anticipated for approximately 300 libraries; the Millennium systems will be live by the spring of 2000.

Maine libraries will be linked together and share resources using INN-Reach, Innovative's union catalog and resource sharing software. The INN-Reach union catalog will be housed at the University of Maine, Orono. The existing University of Maine INNOPAC system will also be upgraded to a Millennium system over the course of the next year.

"Every library will have immediate access to the millions of items represented in the joint INN-Reach database," said Sandy Westall, Innovative's vice president for resource sharing. "This is a huge benefit, especially for the smaller libraries, and really maximizes the resources within the state."

Maine State Library Director Gary Nichols said, "We chose Innovative because of their long-established reputation for offering the finest library automation technology anywhere. Our primary intent is to increase resource sharing, and Innovative's Web-based technology will help us provide greatly improved information access to hundreds of communities across the state."

Karolinska Institutet and Södertörns högskola choose Millennium

PRESS RELEASE: Stockholm, Sweden / Emeryville, California, USA – October 1999

The success of Innovative Interfaces continues in Sweden with the decision by  Karolinska Institutet and Södertörns högskola to install a joint Millennium library automation system.  Installation of Millennium will begin in February 2000 and both Karolinska and Södertörn will be migrating from the LIBERTAS library system.

Louise Brunes, Library Director at Södertörns högskola, said: “Millennium has the best functionality and flexibility of all the systems we looked into, and the new Java™based interfaces make the system modern and user-friendly as well. A good Web OPAC was top priority when choosing a new system and we found that the OPAC of Millennium had the features we required.

Per Olsson, Library Director at Karolinska Institutet pointed out: “It is also very important for us to have as smooth a migration from LIBERTAS as possible and we believe Innovative can offer us the best solution, since they have experts in both applications.”

Mr Olsson added, “During the past 8 years, SLS, both in Great Britain and Scandinavia, has provided excellent support and we are confident that SLS/Innovative will continue to give us equally good service.”

Bob Radford, Business Manager for Innovative Interfaces, said: “Innovative continues to be encouraged by the support and enthusiasm from existing LIBERTAS customers for the Millennium system, and we are delighted to be able to continue our long-standing relationship with Karolinska and Södertörn, two important Swedish institutions.”

Södertörns högskola is one of the most recently founded university colleges in Sweden. It was inaugurated in 1996 with some 1,000 students and is growing by another thousand every year.  By 2003, there will be 7,500 full-time students and 700 employees, most of whom will be PhDs or full professors. Year 2003 is also the year when Södertörns högskola aims to become a complete university.  One of the university’s major tasks is to increase recruitment to higher education while at the same time maintaining the highest academic standards in research and education.

Karolinska Institutet is Sweden’s only university with an exclusive focus on medicine. It is also Sweden’s largest centre for medical training and research, accounting for 30 per cent of the medical academic training and 40 per cent of all the medical academic research that is conducted nationwide. Karolinska Institutet has more than 5,000 full-time students and 3,500 employees 2,000 of whom are researchers. The Karolinska Institutet Library (KIB) is the national medical resource library and the Nordic region’s largest library within its field.
