New low cost RFID technology

Motorola has announced a new technology - BiStatix - that could revolutionise the identification and tracking of library materials.  You will soon be able to have low cost remote sensed labels for automatic check-out and check-in operations.             Details

Endeavor announce first quarter sales

Endeavor have announced that they have sold 43 new library systems in February-April 1999.  Major sites include the National Library of Scotland and the Major UK Universities of Edinburgh (formerly Geac Advance), and Wales - formerly Libertas users.  This brings Endeavor’s customer count to 242.

Data Magician - a cure for data conversion?

Converting bibliographic data from one form to another and handling MARC can be a nightmare even for the skilled programmer.  Data Magician is a tool to allow non-programmers to import and export a variety of formats.                 Review.

BGS and Aberdeen College select  OLIB7Details

The British Geological Survey (BGS) have selected OLIB7 to replace Libertas at their Keyworth and Edinburgh Offices.  Aberdeen College - the largest in Scotland has also gone with Fretwell-Downing.                                                  Details

ISI buys Niles software

The Institute of Scientific Information  (ISI) has acquired Niles software - developers of EndNote.  ISI now owns all 3 of the major Personal Bibliographic Managers - Endnote, ProCite and Reference Manager. see review of these products

McGill University goes for Aleph & Swedish Update

McGill University in Toronto has been signed by Ex Libris in their first major North American site deal.  Other major US deals indicate that Aleph may have broken through in this difficult market.  Full details of recent Swedish sales.

Sirsi win Hampton University and Deere & Co.

A major black University and the well known agricultural equipment manufacturer both go for Sirsi.                Details

Sandra Ward has joined TFPL to head their new Information Management group.  Sandra was recently UK Director of Information services at Glaxo Wellcome.

Other Briefs

Very quietly, Sirsi are offering Oracle DBMS as an alternative to C-ISAM.  This is the second major supplier to embrace mainstream RDBMS recently after years of using proprietary data management tools.  Innovative are soon to offer Oracle.
