VTLS - announces simplified Virtua

Ahead of ALA, VTLS have announced a number of interesting features and a new small library package with simplified set-up.  This follows in the footsteps of other vendors to appeal to the smaller libraries market.

Main Sections

Virtua SLE - Small Libraries Edition

Virtua SLE is a full multi-user system with every function and every feature of the main Virtua system.  SLE includes the Oracle Server, Windows client and even the Chameleon Web Gateway on a PC or a portable.   The main difference between Virtua SLE and Virtua is that SLE can support a maximum of 15 users whereas Virtua can support thousands of users. This version has fewer configuration options making it easier to set up and use for smaller libraries who may not have dedicated support staff.  It is packaged for 5, 10 and 15 simultaneous users and priced appropriately. SLE is available now (Release 36 or later).

Precision Searching and full text document indexing

VTLS has introduced “Precision Searching” in the latest release of Virtua ILS. Precision searching is only available under Oracle 8 and has configuration options that allow users to search for information contained in any tag or sub-field, including the fixed fields of the MARC record.

Results of the search can be printed, saved to file or e-mailed (collectively called PSE) in MARC, full or brief record format. Full text document indexing allows users to search data (content) and metadata in the same search. Precision Searching is available now (Release 36 or later).

Thesaurus Management Support

Virtua now provides access to hierarchically organised thesauri allowing users to browse the thesaurus of their choice and see terms in up to 9 levels in the hierarchy.  A thesaurus term can become a search term for the OPAC. If the OPAC has full authority records then cross- references and other links are automatically invoked. With the Virtua OPAC-Accessible Thesaurus, users can search for equivalent terms, including defined equivalents in other languages, directly from the Chameleon Web Gateway. The system will be available in Release 37 of Virtua which is currently being tested and packaged for release 37 or later

Web-based SDI - Selective Dissemination of Information.

Using a Web interface accessible through the Chameleon Web Gateway, users can create SDI profiles by saving searches to their patron record.  These saved profiles can be executed on demand or at predefined schedules for each profile. Query results can be displayed on the screen or sent to an e-mail address. If the query runs automatically on a preset frequency, then the results are automatically sent via e-mail. Since this feature is in Virtua, the SDI profiles can be directed against different databases, including external Z39.50-compliant databases. SDI is available now (Release 36 or later).
