Consortium and Air Base go for Unicorn

Cooperative Computer Services Chooses SIRSI

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (May 23, 2001)

Cooperative Computer Services (CCS), a consortium of 20 Chicago-area public libraries that are part of the North Suburban Library System, has selected SIRSI to provide a fully integrated, easy-to-use library management system. According to Richard Thompson, director of the Wilmette, Ill., Public Library and chair of the CCS committee responsible for recommending the new system, "The CCS consortium went through a meticulous vendor selection process involving representatives of all the member libraries in a variety of capacities.  We ended up selecting SIRSI in a decision that was unanimous.  Now we're looking forward to our libraries and our patrons reaping the rewards of that decision."

Established in 1975, CCS is the oldest library consortium in the U.S.  Its original purpose was to provide a shared circulation system for member libraries, but it has evolved into a system that supports members' material selection, cataloging, public catalogs, circulation (including payment of bills and fines), interlibrary loan, and other resource-sharing activities, as well as access to local and remote databases.  The 20 CCS libraries serve approximately 600,000 patrons and have an annual circulation of approximately 8 million items.

According to Richard Shurman, CCS Administrator, "We're excited about SIRSI because it will provide us with a well-integrated, graphically based system that is easy to operate from a central site.  We're especially excited about the iBistro™ Electronic Library-not only does it deliver useful content like bestseller lists and book reviews, but the contents are updated by SIRSI. iBistro will help CCS libraries provide better service to their users.  "

Unicorn at Tinker Air Base

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (June 6, 2001)

Tinker Air Force Base, home to seven major U.S. Department of Defense, Air Force, and Navy activities with critical national defense missions, has selected SIRSI Corporation's Unicorn® Library Management System to provide an integrated, easy-to-use system for its base library. According to Bruce Gaver, assistant librarian, the system will enable the Tinker AFB Library effectively to meet the diverse needs of the 22,000 military personnel and civilians it serves.

"While the library supports the base's aircraft maintenance operations, we also serve a large number of civilians and military families," Gaver explained. "We needed a library system that enables us to manage technical materials, as well as our general interest and children's collection. For example, the iBistro™ Electronic Library not only enables us to offer easy online access to holdings, but also to provide current bestseller lists and book reviews for popular titles. In addition, the SIRSI system is rapidly becoming a standard in Air Force base libraries, and we wanted to stay in sync with these other Air Force libraries."

Established in 1941 in honor of Maj. Gen. Clarence J. Tinker, who died leading a World War II flight mission, Tinker Air Force Base is located near Oklahoma City, Okla. Among other missions, it supports the Air Logistics Center, one of five depot repair centers in the Air Force Materiel Command, and the U.S. Navy's Strategic Communications Wing ONE, which provides a secure communications link to the submerged fleet of ballistic missile submarines. Tinker residents include Air Force and Navy active duty personnel, civilian employees, and military retirees.
