Innovative UK launch leadership award

Bristol, England / Emeryville, California, USA – May 2001

The Society of Chief Librarians in England and Wales and Innovative Interfaces, announced the launch of the Innovative Award for Leadership.

This new award is intended to recognise the most outstanding individual leadership project undertaken by graduates of the Leadership Development Course run each year by the Society of Chief Librarians.  The SCL course and the Innovative-sponsored award are designed to encourage the development of leadership skills amongst public library professionals who will form the next generation of library managers.

The Society of Chief Librarians will invite course attendees to submit details of leadership projects undertaken as a result of the course. These projects will be judged by a panel comprising members of the Society and management studies lecturers from the University of Leeds. The graduate whose project most demonstrates, in the view of the panel, the practical application of the theory learnt on the course will be awarded the £1,000 prize money funded by Innovative Interfaces Ltd. The award will be made each year at the annual Public Libraries Conference.

Martin Molloy, Director of Libraries and Heritage for Derbyshire County Council and Vice-President of the Society of Chief Librarians, said: “When we founded the Leadership Course, we were keen to encourage some practical leadership projects as a follow-up activity.  Innovative’s generosity in suggesting and funding this award has been very timely, and enables us to introduce an additional incentive to public library staff to undertake the course and to translate what they have learnt into practical measures to benefit their community and their colleagues.”

Shirley Adams, UK Public Libraries Business Manager for Innovative Interfaces, said: “At a time when many diverse demands are being made on our public library sector, both library staff and users need strong champions to ensure that the UK’s reputation for outstanding public library services is upheld.  Innovative is delighted to fund this award which we believe will provide incentive for upcoming public library professionals to show their potential.”
