Press release: Denver, Co June 28, 2001 Luna Imaging Inc., the premier name in image collections management, and Ex Libris, the international leader in software solutions and related services for libraries and information centers, announced a cooperative agreement today that provides an integrated approach for cataloging, accessing and enhancing the viewing experience and use of both the images and data in library collections. The Cultural Heritage Collaboration in the Digital Age conference co-sponsored by the Western Council of State Librarians and the Colorado Digitization Project provided the ideal backdrop for announcing the agreement that will allow libraries currently using Ex Libris’ DigiTool software to integrate the enhanced image viewing, management and presentation features of Luna’s Insight® software. In addition, those organizations currently using Insight® will have the opportunity to expand their information database when utilizing Ex Libris’ integrated library automation solutions. "Luna’s Insight® software provides Ex Libris with the opportunity to provide our customers a complementary solution for advanced image and rich media viewing, managing and presentation," according to Michael Kaplan, Director of Product Management for Ex Libris. "The seamless integration between our applications supports our customers' goal of having greater levels of integration between university-wide as well as world-wide resources." Luna Imaging President Michael Ester said the agreement supports Luna's goal of broadening the use of digital image and media collections by demonstrating Insight's interoperability with the new generation of library systems and providing a rich set of tools for working dynamically with these collections online. "Ex Libris' customers represent some of the most prestigious institutions in the world responsible for managing vast collections," Ester says. "We are honored to be associated with them and to provide the complete visual environment for expanded use and access to these important resources." Luna's Insight® software was developed with input from users - the researchers, professors, students and collections managers who work with visual collections. The result is a scalable, multi-platform software tool that enables users to dynamically view and work with high-resolution images, data, video and audio materials online. Several leading institutions are using Insight® to draw upon their digital resources for teaching in the classroom, displaying presentations with digital projectors or monitors. In the first demonstration of the compatibility of Luna's Insight® software with library management systems, a select group of historic maps from the David Rumsey collection was integrated into Ex Libris' DigiTool software. Attendees at the conference, were able to use DigiTool to access thumbnail images and data, while those seeking high-resolution images in the collection were discreetly transferred into the Insight® user workspace to zoom, pan and conduct side by side comparisons of high resolution images in the collection. Ex-Libris is a leading worldwide developer of high-performance applications for libraries and information centers. ALEPH500, the Ex Libris integrated library solution, is installed at over 600 sites in 44 countries. Its SFX context sensitive reference linking service and MetaLib Internet universal gateway and portal are establishing new standards in integrating traditional and digital information environments.
