June 16, 2001 – Los Angeles, CA. Infotrieve, a global leader in commercial document delivery, today announced an arrangement with Ex Libris Inc. to provide access to Infotrieve`s document delivery services through links from Ex Libris` SFX context-sensitive linking software. As Infotrieve`s newest Platinum-level service partner, SFX users can request articles directly from Infotrieve`s pay-per-view, complete-text delivery service. SFX permits context-sensitive linking within a library’s entire electronic collection, providing seamless integration of heterogeneous resources for management by the librarian. The librarian defines the conceptual relationships between different information resources to enable users to fully exploit the collection and link to appropriate services, such as Infotrieve. Templates for creating links between SFX and Infotrieve are included with the SFX server software, making it easy for librarians to offer Infotrieve document delivery services across a wide range of the library`s resources. These Infotrieve links can be selectively provided when an article is not available from the library’s collection, for delivery either in electronic or print formats. "Infotrieve is increasingly an essential resource for resolving document delivery requests at libraries," said Jenny Walker, Director of Sales and Marketing for Ex Libris’ Information Services Division. "Within the SFX framework of open linking, Infotrieve will serve as a delivery service from SFX-enabled resources such as records in abstracting and indexing databases, or references in journal articles." "The Ex Libris partnership represents another piece of our growing document delivery business," said Tom Ryan, Vice President of Business Development at Infotrieve. "The links to Infotrieve`s delivery services provide real value to the SFX software, giving users the ability to retrieve citations not available from a library`s own collections." Los Angeles-based Infotrieve is one of the largest independent document delivery and library services companies in the world. Through its international network of library, archive, and publishing alliances, the company offers full-service online research and document delivery services, and tools to simplify the process of identifying, retrieving, and paying for published literature. Infotrieve’s mission is to facilitate efficient, affordable, and innovative methods of distributing published materials to libraries and end users while protecting the rights of content creators. Infotrieve has an established reputation in the retrieval and delivery of printed material and is fast becoming the market leader in the delivery of electronic content (e-content). |

June 16, 2001 – Chicago, IL. Ex Libris and the ABLE Partnership announced today that they have jointly developed an information interface between Ex Libris’ ALEPH 500 library management system and the ABLE library binding system. Ex Libris and the ABLE Partnership have undertaken this development for the benefit of their shared customers who will now be able to move data back and forth between the two systems automatically. This will mean that Ex Libris’ ABLE customers will be able to use ABLE as an extension of ALEPH 500. “This is a natural evolution of Ex Libris’ growing and ever more sophisticated involvement in the North American marketplace,” said Michael Kaplan, Director of Product Management of Ex Libris (USA). “Libraries have long chafed under the necessity of maintaining entirely separate Binders’ modules with the added necessity of double keying. Even though Ex Libris will continue to develop and even expand its own, internal binding module, libraries will still remain tied to the requirement of entering data into the binders’ systems. In the course of meeting with Paul Parisi and John Petraglia of the ABLE Partnership, we became convinced that a shared, two-way information exchange could bring immediate benefit to the ALEPH and ABLE customer base.” Paul Parisi, President of Acme Bindery and Managing Partner of the ABLE Partnership, commented, “Carl Grant (President of Ex Libris (USA), Inc.) and Ex Libris deserve great praise for the vision and resolve to make this “Interface Dream” become a reality. Since one of the ABLE Partners also owns and supports LARS, ABLE has the ability to read and write both ABLE and LARS data. Therefore any Ex Libris library can operate a tightly integrated, item-record barcode-driven ABLETM binding module that can communicate with its binder.” At the May 2001, meeting of the Library Binding Institute (LBI), Don Dunham, LBI Executive Director, and the LBI members agreed enthusiastically to support this breakthrough initiative by Ex Libris. As Ex Libris and ABLE implement their joint developments, ALEPH 500 libraries will be able to capture all the information required by ABLE via a Z39.50 pull directly from ALEPH simply by wanding barcodes on materials destined for the bindery. Once an entire bindery lot has been entered into the ABLE database, Ex Libris will receive a data file that it will use to populate information in ALEPH. When the Bindery shipment is returned, ALEPH users will be able to automatically clear the bindery status. ABLE has been in successful operation for the past 12 years and is used by major binderies in the U.S.A., Canada, UK, Germany and Japan. Some 400+ libraries use the ABLE Library component. “This is major new functionality that the customers of Ex Libris have been eagerly anticipating” said Carl Grant, President of Ex Libris. “The increasing trend towards distance education initiatives can now be readily supported by ALEPH 500 as libraries will now be able to streamline their handling of e-reserve materials, the authorization of students to use those materials and the capability to ensure copyright compliance at the same time.“ |
