GEAC provide Z-Engine for new Book Data service

Book Data takes stake in first Edition

New Z based bibliographic record service Launched

Back: Ian Manson - Sales Manager Geac & Will Blackburn Library Manager BDZ; Front: Steve Barker - General Manager Geac; Brigid Macleod - Sales and Marketing Director Book Data.

BDS (Bibliographic Data Services) Ltd and Book Data Ltd, the UK based book industry records supply companies, have co-operated on the creation of a joint, Z39.50 based, on-line record supply service for the library sector called BDZ.

BDZ is powered by Geac Software Solutions Limited and comprises two services:

  • A "pure" cataloguing service providing MARC cataloguing data.
  • An "Acquisitions and cataloguing" service providing the base MARC record with the add Book Data enrichment of long and short descriptions tables of contents, cover images and daily updated wholesaler stock information.

BDZ is designed to provide library quality data e.g. UKMARC and MARC21 records - allowing libraries to create a catalogue or fill gaps in their existing cataloguing.  In addition to cataloguing, BDZ also provides acquisitions information in the form of Book Data's enriched records, which can be used as a resource by both librarians and library users.

BDZ  is the integration of BDS library quality records and Book Data's enriched information. British Library content going back to 1950 further enhances this data. BDZ uses Geac's Z39.50 software to present the separate sources as a unified search result in one consistent format.

BDZ information is held on a server in Dumfries. Access to the system is via any Z39.50 client - typically records will be loaded into the cataloguing client from a Z search.

Book Data will license BDZ to a library authority on a corporate licence basis thus the number of sites or users does not dictate the cost of BDZ - creating a simple cost management structure for the library. Once a library has bought BDZ, the annual subscription will cover multiple usage throughout the library.
