Wings Independence - free ILL software
|
|
January 12, 2001 (Washington, DC) Pigasus Software, Inc
strikes a blow for ISO 10161. Pigasus Software believes strongly that the ISO 10161 standard provides the means for libraries to improve
services, streamline processing, and save money by enabling all libraries to intercommunicate. The library community has been frustrated by the slow adoption of this
long-standing protocol. Pigasus Software announces the cost-free INDEPENDENCE Request Management System, making the means to communicate in ISO 10161 freely available to libraries with limited software choices.
Pigasus Software's WINGS Request Management System, a fully functional set of tools for
managing the full range of interlibrary loan and document delivery request-related tasks, has been available since 1998. The INDEPENDENCE System, based on WINGS technology,
will enable any library to send and receive the full suite of ISO 10161 messages. The INDEPENDENCE System will be available before the annual ALA conference in San
Francisco. ISO 10161 communication moves any library using it well along the path of electronic requesting encouraged in the latest National ILL Policy.
ISO 10161 is the international standard for interlibrary loan and document delivery
processing. Adoption by libraries throughout the community has been slow due to the relative scarcity of ISO-speaking software and the relative high cost of acquiring such
programs. Since it is based on the WINGS System, the INDEPENDENCE Request Management System includes a full implementation of ISO 10161 and will be IPIG Profile conformant.
Candy Zemon, President of Pigasus Software, Inc. said, "We are very pleased to be able to
offer the library community another way to move into a standards-based ILL world. It has clearly been difficult for some small libraries acting alone to obtain software solutions that
offer them the same ISO communication abilities which are more easily available to larger institutions or consortia. Cost is one factor over which we have some control. We trust that
the INDEPENDENCE Request Management System, in concert with the newly available online IPIG ILL policy directory, will open peer-to-peer ILL processing to all libraries,
regardless of size, volume, location, or utility membership."
The INDEPENDENCE System is intended for small, independent ILL offices which would
otherwise have no practical way to obtain ISO ILL software. Libraries using the INDEPENDENCE System will be able to send requests to and receive requests from libraries using any vendor's IPIG Profile conformant software. The INDEPENDENCE
System is limited, however, in that it does not include advanced features such as automatic routing and unmediated processing. |

Pigasus Software to bundle WebClarity
|
|
January 13, 2001 (St. Charles, MO) Pigasus Software, Inc
announces an agreement with Sea Change Corporation to include the
WebClarity(tm) Z39.50 search engine in all WINGS(tm) Request Management Systems. Under the terms of this agreement, all new WINGS Systems will include a two-user license
for the WebClarity web-to-Z39.50 gateway. Pigasus Software is also retrofitting, without additional charge, all of its existing WINGS Systems to include WebClarity.
The WINGS Request Management System uses Z39.50 in two ways. First, library patrons
may use WebClarity to search library databases throughout the world. Once they locate an item which they want, they simply press an “ILL Request” button to create an interlibrary
loan request within the WINGS System. Since the patron does not re-key any data, the library staff is assured of receiving an accurate citation.
Second, the library staff can use WebClarity to locate potential suppliers of requested
items. By pressing a single QUEST(tm) Holdings link button within the WINGS System’s staff interface, an ILL practitioner can simultaneously search the catalogs of multiple lending
libraries. This “broadcast search” provides the quickest and most efficient ownership verification available in any interlibrary loan software package today.
Art Zemon, Vice President of Pigasus Software, said, “We are thrilled to be able to provide
our customers with such a powerful tool. More often than any other feature request, our users have asked us to integrate Z39.50 searching into the WINGS System. Since
WebClarity is based on the field-proven BookWhere product, I have confidence that it will give our users everything they have asked for and more.”
Paul Nixon, Vice President of business development at Sea Change, added, “Our new
relationship with Pigasus is a major milestone in our strategy of providing world-class technology components. WINGS customers will immediately benefit from the many years
of experience, research and development that the WebClarity product represents.” .
