Pigasus shows latest features at ALA 2000

The latest WINGS ™ 2.1 release from Pigasus Software, Inc at ALA showed the way that the ILL packages are going - with multiple routing lists and links to other electronic sources.  The main new features of this release are:

1) *FULL* interoperability with OCLC using ISO 10161 and OCLC's proprietary extensions. This includes support for lender strings and IFM.

2) Completely automated routing for requests. The routing list can be as long as desired (not limited to five lenders, like an OCLC lender string) and can contain a mix of OCLC and non-OCLC lenders. It can also contain a mix of ISO and non-ISO lenders.

3) Patrons can import (without rekeying the data) bibliographic citations which have been saved from databases and programs such as Ovid, SilverPlatter, MEDLINE, and ProCite. The list of supported databases is growing.

By way of additional information on automatic routing, the library staff can set up as many tiers as they want. Each tier contains a list of potential lenders/suppliers. For instance, the library might set up the following tiers:

  • Monographs published after 1990
  • Genealogical microform
  • Genealogical non-microform
  • Journal articles
  • need-by less than 48 hours
  • max cost at least $25
  • Journal articles
  • all other Consortium members
  • Geographically close libraries etc.

When approving a request, the staff member assigns one or more tiers to the request. They can also assign individual Trading Partners. The WINGS(tm) system expands the tiers, dedups the resulting list of Trading Partners (while maintaining OCLC suppliers which are EMST [enter my symbol twice]), and then builds OCLC lender strings as appropriate.
