DS tops UK application software supplier poll, Sainsburies select Calm 2000

DS rated best for UK public authorities

The Society of IT Management (SOCITM) has published their second annual “Survey of Application Software for locally delivered public services", which allows managers in the public sector to identify tried and tested solutions, enabling easy comparisons when considering the purchase of particular packages.

Recent government initiatives to establish standards in the performance of public libraries makes the publication of objective data in reports of this kind extremely useful for managers with the difficult task of selecting their next library system.

The Survey summarises 82 responses, representing nearly 40% of library authorities. ICT Managers were asked to rate their library systems on three key aspects of customer satisfaction.

DS and its Galaxy 2000 system are the clear winners, coming top in all 3 categories with scores of 88% for Software Reliability, 82% for Application Functionality and 72% for Supplier Performance.

DS are delighted with their results in this objective assessment of performance. Managing Director Nigel Pegg is sure that “It is those extra percentage points in customer satisfaction that make the difference between a merely satisfactory experience and a rewarding one", and confirms the DS approach:  "continuous improvement is the only way to forge strategic relationships with customers."

The survey covered 190 UK authorities and costs £200 for non SOCTM subscribers.

Sainsbury’s Archives selects CALM 2000

Sainsbury’s Archives, Britain's leading retail history collection, has purchased DS CALM 2000 for Archives to manage its documents, artefacts and photographs detailing the history of the food retailing company which was founded by John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury in 1869.

The collection provides a fascinating record of changes in shopping and eating habits from the days of butter pats and bacon slicers to the technological sophistication of today’s supermarkets. Since its establishment in 1975, Sainsbury’s Archives has become widely recognised as one of Britain’s leading business collections. The Archives are not open to external researchers except through the Virtual Museum's exhibitions at www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/museum/museum.htm.

Sainsbury's Archives needed a system that would allow them to accurately and concisely record the collection, with a view to providing limited on-line access to the public in the future. After spending many months evaluating potential suppliers the CALM 2000 system was chosen as the best in the field.

DS Calm 2000 is an archive management system used by archivists in County Record Offices, City Archives, Local Studies Departments, corporate organisations, schools, colleges and museums all over the UK & Ireland. The system runs on Windows 95/98/2000/NT and includes accessions, hierarchical archival cataloguing, extensive authority control, and loans/productions.

DS CALM 2000 uses a flexible and relational database structure that simplifies cataloguing, indexing and searching/retrieval tasks. A variety of data formats are handled, including structured full text records, scanned images and original format files.

Records creation conforms to national and international archival standards – ISAD(G), EAD and ISAAR/CPF. A sophisticated subject thesaurus has been developed to international standards, intelligent date range handling is possible using a flexible date parser and for organisations wanting to publish on the Web, there is Web Server capability.

David Stevens, Company Archivist, says, ‘Although our first priority is the retailing business we also have to meet the demands of the public and the DS CALM 2000 system provides the flexibility to marry the needs of both types of customer.

‘It has a well designed interface and very speedy retrieval facilities which ensure that staff can input data and monitor collections, images, information, and loans with ease. It is the best Collections Management software for us.'
