SISIS wins Rotterdam Public Library

September 2000

Rotterdam Public Library Rotterdam Public library, one of the largest in Europe, has signed a contract with Sisis the German library systems specialist, to install their SunRise system. The system will replace an ALS international system that has been in place for more than ten years. This deal follows on the deal with the provincial library of N oord Brabant

The new system will run on a Sun E450 server running Solaris. Sisis SunRise at Rotterdam uses the Sybase RDBMS with Java clients - enabling any browser-enabled client to be used - including thin clients.  The communication between the clients and the server is based on SLNP (simple library network protocol).

The Eurolib co-ooperative project originally involved ALSi, PICA and Sisis and was announced in January 1998.  Sisis have since abandoned co-operation continued with their SunRise system - which may well be an interesting choice of name since this has also been chosen by epixtech as the name for their upcoming revamp of Dynix / Horizon.

This logical protocol is based on TCP/IP and allows simple access to the different modules and services. SNLP also allows other suppliers' compatible products to be used with SunRise.

The Sisis SunRise product consists of different modules, including all the functions needed in public and scientific libraries. Acquisition including Serials Control and electronic transmission of orders in XML, Cataloguing, Circulation including Inter-Library Loans, and an OPAC system with external services over the Internet.

Although the main implementation is scheduled for Spring 2001, the project has already started. The first step has been the conversion of the existing data - following on from the experience with the data conversion in the 'Staedtische Bibliotheken Leipzig last year. The project will be co-ordinated by the recently founded subsidiary, Sisis Informatiesystemen BV located in Schiedam, Netherlands.

SunRise is supported under Sun/Solaris, SNI/ReliantUNIX, IBM/AIX and HP/UX.

The Gemeentebibliotheek consists of the central library 22 branch libraries and 2 book-mobiles.  Circulation is about 5 million every year, the Gemeentebibliotheek Rotterdam is one of the biggest public libraries in the Netherlands.
