Dobis / Libis site transfers to Amicus
|
|
Leuven, September 13th, 2000
Another Spanish University, Universidad del Pais Vasco, has gone live with the ELiAS library
management system, AMICUS. UPV is the third Spanish customer to successfully migrate from the Dobis/Libis system [also from ELiAS] to AMICUS. The library is now the fourth AMICUS site in production in Spain.
The Universidad del Pais Vasco is the central university of the Basque country, and is located in
Bilbao. It caters for over 60,000 students spread over three campuses. ELiAS submitted their proposal to replace their existing Dobis system in March 1999. The subsequent migration and
installation was assisted by Scanbit S.L. of Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The installed system is version 3.2 and is running alongside version 1.6.5 of LibriVision, which is
being used as the OPAC for the university's library. Extensive customization was carried out to supply the system in the local language. LibriVision has been made available to students in Basque, English and Spanish.

Sultan Qaboos University of Oman

Leuven, July 2000
The Sultan Qaboos University of Oman is the first library to go live with an Arabic version of the
library management system – AMICUS, from Extended Library Access Solutions (ELiAS). This weekend the Sultan Qaboos University of Oman began to use the Arabic AMICUS client in all four
campus university libraries. AMICUS was the natural choice of the Omani University as they have been customers of ELiAS using DOBIS/LIBIS - the predecessor of AMICUS - since the early
1990’s. The entire AMICUS library suite including searching, cataloguing, circulation, serial control, acquisitions, products and client services is available in an Arabic GUI. Staff at the
university are happy with the progress that has been made in recent months and with the flexibility of using either an English or an Arabic client.
The Sultan Qaboos was founded in 1986 and to date it is the first and the only university in Oman.
The library is spread over three floors and has a collection of over 150,000 items, including 5-6000 audio-visual materials. The library offers an invaluable service to the current registrar of over
8,000 students. The implementation of an Arabic AMICUS is an important development for the university as it moves towards greater information provision in an age of rapid technical progress.
