New reading list system from Talis

November 2000

Other Talis news - New MD appointed

Talis Information Ltd has provided the University of Sussex with their new TalisList system that delivers access to articles directly from a student reading list on-line.

TalisList enables students to search via the Web for their reading lists, based on course, tutor or study module. Teaching staff with privileged access to the system can set up and edit their own reading lists.

TalisList, developed in close partnership with the University of Sussex, greatly enhances the effectiveness with which students find and utilise recommended resources.

Features of TalisList include:

  • · Operates stand-alone – not tied to the Talis Library Management System. Can operate in libraries where other LMS’s are used. Where Talis is in use, it offers full integration.
  • · Academic staff can maintain their own lists, which can include web-based resources in addition to the standard library stock.
  • · Automated list management. The relevance of data is ensured by limiting the display of content to its correct period e.g. the current term.
  • · Fully configurable interface with support for multiple interfaces, for example non-English language offerings.
  • · Developed in Java, with all functions operated through a browser (versions 4 and above).
  • · Support for both Unix and NT platforms.

Maggie Fieldhouse, Sub-librarian for Systems and Reader Services at Sussex said: “The University has enjoyed working closely with Talis to develop this new software. Without it we wouldn’t be able to offer such a comprehensive service to students, or run our operations so efficiently.”

Listed resources can include web-based materials in addition to standard library stock. TalisWeb OPAC has been enhanced to seamlessly integrate information about the location and availability of books.

Richard Wallis, Technical Development Manager at Talis said: “Talis has always focussed on building creative relationships with its clients and at Sussex the company has matched this product with the specific needs of the University and its students.”

TalisList was launched publicly on the 27th September of this year a total of four Talis customers have ordered the new software.
