Elias announce Unicode support

May 2000

LibriVision enhanced with new UNICODE support: Support for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Cyrillic.

Leuven, May 26, 2000: Extended Library Access Solutions, pioneers of innovative technology for library and information professionals announced today the latest release of their search and retrieval software product, LibriVision, to include UNICODE support. LibriVision Version 1.8 release 5 supports the display and storage of UNICODE characters. This is particularly good news for the Sultan Qaboos Library in Oman who will soon be live with a fully functional Arabic AMICUS library system and the National Library of Hungary who are using a Hungarian version of AMICUS.

UNICODE as a long-term solution

ELiAS is committed to providing solutions that incorporate the latest international standards and as the software industry becomes increasingly global, experts believe that Unicode will eventually supplant ASCII as the standard character coding format. Unlike ASCII, which uses 8 bits for each character, Unicode uses 16 bits, which means that it can represent more than 65,000 unique characters.

Development manager at ELiAS, Paul Mouland explained that the initial phase of UNICODE implementation was to provide support for one byte character sets, such as Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Cyrillic. The second phase will concentrate on two byte character sets, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Paul Mouland also stated that he is delighted to announce this move "as the first step in

ELiAS's plans for complete UNICODE support in all our products".
