Royal College of Holloway

London, March 15, 2000
Ex Libris (UK) Ltd. has signed a contract with Royal Holloway, University of London, to license
and implement ALEPH 500 at the school's libraries. ALEPH 500 will replace the current LIBERTAS system.
Royal Holloway, University of London, is ranked among Britain's top academic institutions. It has
earned a world-class reputation for high-quality research in the humanities, sciences, and performing arts. The beautiful campus at Egham, just 19 miles from the centre of London, offers
an outstanding learning environment to over 6,000 students hailing from Britain and 80 other countries.
Says Sarah Gerrard, Head Librarian, "We wanted a business partnership with the company of
our choice, and Ex-Libris demonstrated a willingness to listen and to incorporate our comments into their future plans. ALEPH applies the potential of modern technology to traditional library thinking."
According to Marc Daubach, managing director of Ex Libris (UK) Ltd., this agreement represents
the eighth major ALEPH 500 installation in the British Isles since the opening of the Ex Libris office in London in mid-1998.

Four new ALEPH 500 users in Germany
|
|
Tel-Aviv, March 16, 2000
Ex Libris (Deutschland) GmbH, has announced that since the start of the year, four important
institutions in quite different application areas, have chosen ALEPH 500 as their new library automation and management systems.
The Max Plank Institutes (MPI) for economic research, chemical ecology and bio-geochemistry at
Jena are also migrating from BIS-LOK to ALEPH 500. They will operate as a consortium with each having their own administrative database, allowing for independent cataloging, circulation
and acquisitions and the possibility for all users to access the common central catalog via the ALEPH Web OPAC.
These institutes are part of the prestigious Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences
(MPG), a non-profit research organisation founded in 1948 and named after the famous theoretical physicist Max Planck (1858-1947), who in 1918 was awarded the Nobel Prize for
Physics for his work on the quantum theory. The MPG is the roof organisation for currently 100 MPIs (research institutes, laboratories and workgroups). These are carrying out basic research in
selected, but steadily expanding, fields in natural, human and social sciences. They cooperate closely with a number of universities, also granting these access to the Max Planck facilities and
main-frame computers. See www.rzg.mpg.de
The Academy for Motion Pictures and Television (HFF) at Potsdam is replacing its BIS-LOK
system (also from Ex Libris-Germany) with ALEPH 500 in conjunction with its move to new premises. The software upgrade will be completed by mid-2001. A little later, the HFF library is to
be connected to the ALEPH network at the KOBV in Berlin-Brandenburg.
The Library of the Ruhr-Foundation in Bochum will be the first of several institutions in the Land of
Nordrhein-Westfalen to install ALEPH 500 locally and tie up, via a Z39.50 gateway, with the ALEPH-based HBZ Consortium (see our earlier release on HBZ). The library of the Ruhr
Foundation, combining three formerly independent academic libraries and working closely with the Ruhr University at Bochum, was solemnly inaugurated in November of last year.
The Center for Advanced European Studies and Research (Caesar) in the former capital city of
Bonn have, in their own words, opted for ALEPH 500 as one of the most modern library automation systems, enabling their numerous external researchers to have direct access to the
catalog, along with enhanced remote services such as items booking, reservation, prolongation etc. Serving a mostly English-speaking patrons community, the Caesar library will be equipped
with the English version of ALEPH in MARC format.

Ex Libris Spearheads Contribution To Cambodia
|
|
March 16,2000
Ex Libris, Ltd., announced today that along with Sun Microsystems, Inc., Oracle Corporation, and
SilverPlatter Information, Inc., it would be donating a completely implemented ALEPH 500 library automation system to the Royal University of Phnom Penh. This system will be complemented by
an ERL Intranet solution from SilverPlatter Information, Inc.
Azriel Morag, Chairman of Ex Libris, said after a recent trip to Southeast Asia, "I was greatly
impressed by the country and its people but saddened to find that the educational infrastructure needs to be completely rebuilt. Then and there I decided that I must take action and initiate an
effort to improve the educational conditions in Cambodia."
After discussions with the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Mr. Morag began to work out the
logistics and develop partnerships for the implementation of the comprehensive ALEPH library system. Joining the project, Sun Microsystems is donating an Enterprise 250 server, SilverPlatter
is contributing the Medline and ERIC databases, and Oracle is providing a run-time license for all users of the system. The ALEPH system will be tightly integrated with SilverPlatter's ERL Intranet
Solution, which also runs on Sun's Enterprise 250 server. In addition to the license to use the ALEPH software, Ex Libris will install the system and provide training, maintenance, and support without charge.
Mr. Pit Chamnan, Rector of the Royal University commented, "We Cambodians are a determined
people. We are actively rebuilding our country with pride and hard work. This gift was a total surprise, and we are enormously grateful. We had never imagined that the Royal University would
be able to provide our students and staff with the finest library system in the world. Our sincere thanks to Ex Libris, Sun, SilverPlatter, and Oracle, and a special thanks to Mr. Morag, who
recognized a need and so generously contributed company resources and, more importantly, his personal time and commitment."
