Bournemouth University foresees a bright future with Aurora

June 2000

Esprit Information Solutions have entered a partnership with Bournemouth University to tailor the Aurora library management system to the needs of UK higher education. The University's Library, which has a well-established record of technical and professional innovation, sees a system such as Aurora as central to its drive to maximise the value returned from the University's investment in learning resources, systems and technologies. The University is focused on selecting solutions that deliver up to the minute functionality and represent excellent value for money, but also demands effective interoperation with internal and external systems and the implementation of technical standards that can improve the efficiency of learning and teaching and business processes.

The Aurora system, developed by AIT and exclusively marketed in the UK and Ireland by Esprit Information Solutions, was designed from the outset to meet the expanding demands of modern library services as they strive for excellence in traditional service provision and an effective transition into hybrid and digital environments. Aurora provides a powerful set of tools to meet the heaviest demands of the traditional professional service alongside powerful resource discovery and multi-media handling capabilities.

David Ball, University Librarian at Bournemouth, has demanding aspirations for the new system, ‘…we believe that Aurora has the potential to provide a significant improvement in the cost-effectiveness of the University Library. The product's Microsoft NT foundations will ensure a good match with the University’s adoption of Microsoft as a preferred technical platform. But we will be demanding a lot from the new product and will be working with partner Universities, Esprit and AIT to hone its facilities to the requirements of the UK Higher Education sector…”

Jim Burton, Esprit Managing Director, has welcomed the challenge presented by the new partnership with Bournemouth and sees the prospective implementation at the University as a significant advance into the UK Higher Education sector, saying  ‘We know that Aurora is a powerful and highly functional system built around the most successful technology platform in the world and Esprit is delighted to be working with Bournemouth University to demonstrate the value of the system to a forward looking Higher Education library service like Bournemouth’.
