Momentum for Ex Libris grows as SUNY and Brandeis choose Aleph

The State University of New York (SUNY) has chosen Aleph for its new library management software. Brandeis and Boston College have followed suit. And another national library sale for Ex Libris - this time in Chile - and the Universidad del Valle de Mexico - shows their continuing strength in America both  North and South.

SUNY, the State University of New York

Press release: October 28, 1999.

SUNY, the State University of New York, announced today that they had selected the ALEPH500 system from Ex Libris (USA) Inc.  Pending successful contract negotiations, ALEPH500 is poised to become the core library management system (LMS) for the SUNYConnect initiative.  SUNYConnect will provide access to the entire SUNY library collection of 18 million volumes while integrating technology based resources and capabilities with traditional library services.

SUNY is a unified system of public higher education institutions with 64 campuses, representing 71 libraries comprised of community colleges, two-year colleges of technology, specialized and statutory colleges, traditional four-year colleges, research university campuses and academic health science centers. Serving nearly 400,000 students SUNY is the nation's largest single, most diverse, multi-campus higher education system.  SUNY stands today as a system of higher education committed to excellence, access, diversity, affordability, research and service to the state and nation.

Dr. Peter D. Salins, SUNY Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, stated he is "pleased with the capabilities the Ex Libris system brings to the development of new cooperative arrangements with libraries as part of the SUNYConnect project."

Noting that ALEPH has demonstrated essential library functions and highly developed consortium components, Mr. Carey B. Hatch, SUNY Assistant Provost for Library and Information Services, said of the selection, "We saw in ALEPH, and Ex Libris, a unique combination of flexibility, functionality and collaboration that meant SUNY institutions would benefit from a common system that would facilitate access to unique collections, while allowing each institution to tailor the system to the needs of their users. Ultimately, the selection of ALEPH is a fundamental component in taking SUNYConnect one step closer to reality."

The SUNY system has a tradition of individual campus autonomy. SUNY libraries, as a result have implemented a wide variety of library management systems. During the early 1990s, 40 SUNY libraries worked together to implement the DRA/Multilis software. As a direct result of the success of that program, SUNYConnect was begun with the goal of having as many SUNY libraries as possible using the same LMS.  That system is ALEPH500. Installation and implementation of the system will occur over the next 4-5 years and will ultimately support a database of 18 million volumes.

Carl Grant, President of Ex Libris (USA) Inc. said "SUNY's selection of ALEPH and Ex Libris (USA) Inc is deeply gratifying.  It tells us that our devotion to listening to the needs of the customer and collaborating with the customer in addressing those needs is indeed the approach desired. More importantly, it confirms for the marketplace at large, that ALEPH and Ex Libris represent an important part of the future of library automation in North America."

With a strong customer base of academic institutions and consortia, Ex Libris has been expanding its market in North America. SUNY joins major North American research institutions such as the University of Iowa, McGill University, Boston College and the University of Notre Dame in selecting the  ALEPH500 system.

Biblioteca Nacional de Chile

Press release: October 24, 1999

The Biblioteca Nacional de Chile (BN), the oldest library in Latin America has selected ALEPH 500 as the software which will take them into the 21st. Century.

Founded in 1813, the early government had the vision to establish the National Library of Chile and then proclaim that the mission of the library was to provide libraries to the cities and towns of Chile. The words of the mission have changed, but the intent continues. Over the years, BN has always endeavored to provide the best possible tools and services to the people of Chile.  BN was one of the first libraries in Latin America to implement NOTIS, at that time the preeminent library automation system available. And now, after a two-year evaluation process, the Biblioteca Nacional is continuing in the leadership role by selecting ALEPH.

Ex Libris. working cooperatively with Sistemas Logicos, the ALEPH distributor in Central and South America, has established a project plan and begun the conversion of data.

Sra. Clara Budnik, Directora de Bibliotecas, said “We are very happy that the rich tradition of the Biblioteca Nacional de Chile will be extended to the current and future generations by the sistema ALEPH. We have a responsibility to the people of Chile to provide the best possible access to our archives and with this change, we will fulfill that duty.”

The installation of Aleph in the Biblioteca Nacional has been made possible through a joint project with the . Mellon foundation of the united states, which has played an active role worldwide in ensuring that developing countries have access to appropriate information technology, and the Andes Foundation of Chile. These Foundations are also supporting the installation of Aleph in the Catholic university library in Santiago.

With the first contract in Chile signed at the end of 1998, there are now 4 libraries in that country licensed for ALEPH.  In Latin America, ALEPH is installed in over 50 libraries.

Ex Libris World Headquarters are in Israel with offices in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. The company also maintains sales and support offices in the USA, Brazil, Great Britain, Luxembourg, and Germany, and has exclusive distributors in Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal and South Africa.

Universidad del Valle de Mexico

Mexico, D.F., December 1999

Systemas Lógicos, Ex Libris’s exclusive distributor in Mexico, is pleased to announce that the Universidad del Valle de Mexico (UVM) has chosen ALEPH 500 to equip the libraries of its 14 campuses in Mexico City and other locations around the country. The UVM site represents the 18th Ex Libris installation in Mexico.

Founded in 1960, UVM currently numbers over 29,000 registered students. One of the major private academic institutions of the country, it confers high school diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees.

Mr. Daniel Moreno, director of the UVM library system, commented, "The most important factor in favor of ALEPH is its very modern architecture, which will enable us to offer our users an efficient OPAC and will let us build and maintain a union catalog for the 14 libraries in the net. The fact that our patrons will be able to access electronic documents and all kind of multimedia information through the OPAC influenced our decision greatly."

ALEPH will be installed on a single server and will be accessed simultaneously from the 14 libraries across the country, thanks to an extremely rapid, efficient network.

Brandeis University chooses ALEPH
December 8, 1999, Chicago, Illinois

Academic excellence has always characterized Brandeis University. Of the approximately 3,700 institutions of higher education in the United States, Brandeis is one of only 62 institutions that are members of the Association of American Universities, an organization representing the leading research universities in North America. The Brandeis University libraries contain over one million volumes and offer access to a wealth of electronic resources. Today Brandeis announced a plan to enhance the research capabilities of its libraries by installing ALEPH500 as its next-generation library automation system. Brandeis University's ALEPH system will support 100 concurrent users on a Sun Enterprise 450 hardware platform and will involve a full data conversion from the DRA Classic system. The ALEPH system is scheduled to go live in the summer of 2000.

Bessie K. Hahn, university librarian, said "As we looked to the future, we knew that our libraries needed a system that would serve as a building block for our future plans--a system that offered rich functionality and superior multilingual support. We found those capabilities in the ALEPH system from Ex Libris."

Boston College
November 8, 1999 - Chicago, Illinois.

In the recent US News and World Report annual survey of "Best Colleges," Boston College again appeared in the "Top 50" list, ranking 39th, and for the second straight year appeared on the "Best Values" list.  Now Boston College has signed a contract with Ex Libris USA for the installation of ALEPH500 as its next-generation library management system. Boston College offers undergraduate through post-graduate studies with a student population of 8,900 undergraduates and 4,800 graduate students.  The University Libraries, which include the Thomas P. O'Neill Library, named for the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, contain 1.8 million volumes and will be converting to ALEPH500 from the current NOTIS system.

Jerome Yavarkovsky, University Librarian, said "We were delighted to find in the ALEPH system, a tool which we believe will provide our library and library staff real advantages in meeting the challenges of the new millennium as we continue to offer more electronic resources while maintaining our traditional services.  We looked at many companies and systems and found a unique combination of functionality, collaboration and service being offered by Ex Libris. We are confident in our choice."

The ALEPH system will support a total of 1.6M bibliographic records and 460 users running on IBM's SP hardware. It is scheduled to go live in the summer of 2000.
