Kanawha County Public Library Creates e-Library
|
|
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Dec. 15, 2000) Kanawha County Public Library (KCPL), the largest public
library system in West Virginia, recently installed Sirsi Corporation's iBistro to provide users with a complete electronic library. According to KCPL library staff, iBistro enables them to offer
library users much of the same personalized service, resources, and knowledge via the Internet as they do within the walls of their library buildings.
Located in Charleston, West Virginia's capital city, KCPL has 10 branches and a bookmobile
that provide year-round service to all areas of the county. In addition, its iBistro is available to users at KCPL's more than 100 workstations, at 15 schools in the local K-12 school system, or
from any computer with a Web browser. Through iBistro, users can do almost anything normally done in a traditional "brick and mortar" library, plus view enriched content on library holdings,
create a personal account for automatic notification of new items by authors and on subjects of interest to them, browse cataloged Web sites, view bestseller lists, and place holds-all from a
single, simple interface.
Linda Wright, KCPL director, noted, "For several years, this library has had a vision of providing
a comparable level of service and features online that we do in our physical facilities. We've come progressively closer to this goal as we've introduced new technologies over the years, and
now we have made a major step closer to our vision. We are excited that now with iBistro, we've been able to implement a cutting-edge gateway to our online catalog.
Larry Smith, SIRSI COO, commented, "SIRSI is proud that KCPL chose iBistro to establish their
new electronic library. They are taking the lead in providing the type of library that 21st century users need-one that doesn't confine them to the contents of a single physical facility, but rather
provides them with easy-to-use and powerful access to the entire universe of knowledge via the Internet."

National Center for State Courts Decides in SIRSI's Favor
|
|
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Dec. 1, 2000) The National Center for State Courts (The National Center),
a nonprofit organization that provides educational, technical, consulting, research, international and information leadership and services to the nation's state courts and worldwide, has selected
Sirsi Corporation's Unicorn Library Management System for its Information Resource Center (IRC). The Information Resource Center is part of The National Center's Knowledge
Management Office (KMO).According to Marcia Koslov, Knowledge Management Director, Unicorn will replace the existing library system and enable KMO to make a variety of resources
easily accessible through the World Wide Web.
Founded in 1971 at the urging of Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, The National Center is
dedicated to improving judicial administration and building public trust and confidence in the courts. The KMO's mission is to provide access to data, information, and knowledge about court
administration and judicial systems for court managers, judges, and other constituents.
Koslov commented, "The IRC has a unique collection of materials related to state court
administration and the operation of court systems. We also do in-depth research in response to requests for information from judges, court administrators, and the media, which we want make
accessible on our Web site.
"The SIRSI system will be very easy for our staff to set up and connect to all the resources on the
Web, and iBistro will be easy for our users to understand and navigate. Also, it has NT compatibility, which is important to us because we are an NT shop. We were pleased, too, that
we have the opportunity to add a digital media archive through Hyperion."
