Geac in credit talks with banks

December 2000

by Peter Evans

Geac has grown enormously over the last ten years as it has pursued an aggressive acquisitions strategy culminating inthe purchase of the JBA the British ERP supplier. However, since then, the slowdown in the ERP market and difficulties with absorbing the company has led to losses of C$56.5 million for the second quarter. The same period last year saw profits of C$19.7. Together with the rest of the technology sector the share price has crashed from a 52-week high of $28.20 on Dec.  30, 1999, to a low of $2 on Dec.  18. On January 10th the price was C$2.20.

Just before Christmas, Geac’s credit line expired and they are now in negotiations with their bankers. The company has been open to offers for sale in part or as a whole since September when they announced that they would cut 12% of their staff - 500 jobs in order to cut C$60million in annual expenses.

Vubis sale and new cataloguing client

The Geac library system portfolio includes Advance, PLUS, Book and, Vubis - this latter system sold mostly in the Netherlands.  The system has recently been rebuilt as a client server (Vubis4WIndows) and runs MS Windows NT or various major flavours of UNIX.  May 2001 will see a powerful new bibliographic workstation released. Based on a thin client model, it will allow the editing and loading of any MARC and non-Marc formats to the Vubis database - although, sadly, it will not talk to other systems.  More information about Vubis

GGZ Oost Brabant selects Vubis 4 Windows

's-Hertogenbosch, November 2000

The library of GGZ Oost Brabant (psychiatric health care) has chosen Geac’s Vubis4Windows system.  This institute has locations in Boekel, Boxmeer, Veghel, Uden, Oss, Rosmalen, Helmond, Bakel, Wychen and Gemert.  The library is located in 'Huize Padua' close to Boekel and has a  branch library in Oss.

GGZ Oost Brabant has been a Strix user for years.  When the producer of Strix announced that the system would no longer be supported, the library started looking at Vubis 4 Windows. In October the software was installed on an Unix platform.  Geac convertd the Strix-database in November. The training to use Vubis 4 Windows will start in December.
